💡 Limitations and Future Research

This thesis has a great impact on the practitioners in the IP field who are part of the innovation network. Like any research, some limitations have to be evaluated. These limitations create the opportunity for further research which I will explain in depth in the following. Firstly, there are some limitations regarding the interview sample size. Due to the com-bination of purposeful (Patton, 2002) and snowball sampling (Sadler et al., 2010), this results in a sensitive selection of experts. As a consequence, the network could be limited. The proba-bility for this was kept low by the combination of the two methods, but it is still within the range of possibility. In a subsequent study, a larger sample size and experts from several diffe-rent countries within and outside the EU should be considered. Another interesting aspect for future research would be to consider the point of view of countries that are not members of WIPO to see if the results of this work are reflected. Furthermore, the study was conducted during the COVID-19 global pandemic, which resulted in all interviews having to be conducted via Microsoft Teams. Especially with online interviews, it is reasonable to assume that information may have been lost due to the more for-mal nature of the digital environment and the lack of informal conversations before and after the interviews. the budget of some of the participants interviewed may also have been affected by the pandemic, which may have led to a lack of awareness of new technology-based tools. it would be useful to repeat the study in the future in order to be able to draw a comparison and thus perhaps identify new influencing factors. However, another weakness resulting from the nature of the qualitative studies is the in-sufficient comparability of the results. Therefore, it is advisable to conduct a quantitative study in the coming year to evaluate the development of the above-mentioned technologies and ser-vices in a quantitative context. Concerns also remain in the accessible literature online. Data on the sensitive financial aspect in particular is very sporadically searchable. The combination of practical literature re-garding the protection of digital IP in the context of current legal developments is also in need of development. However, as this topic receives more and more resonance, it is quite conceiva-ble that more scientific papers will focus on this topic in the near future.
